About fellowships

Apply for fellowships to visit the Bodleian Libraries Special Collections for research into the history of manuscript and early books collections; eighteenth-century studies; and new technologies of communication.

The Bodleian Libraries Centre for the Study of the Book, in partnership with learned societies and through the generosity of donors, will award five Visiting Research Fellowships in the coming year. See the list of fellowships for the topics covered. Fellowships support residence in Oxford to facilitate research and intellectual exchange in the University of Oxford and the wider research community.

The Humfrey Wanley Fellowship
The fellowship is named after Humfrey Wanley who is regarded as one of the pioneers in the study of manuscripts. As a member of staff of the Bodleian Library in the 1690’s, Wanley was one of the first scholars to regard books as research materials in themselves and during this period he was instrumental in developing the skills that he would later deploy in ground-breaking publications.
