Album of Indian paintings and calligraphy, dating from the period of Shahjahan's reign, including several portraits of the Mughal emperors

Format: 60 leaves : paper, ill., 385 x 255 mm. (page)

Decoration: illuminations; 41 miniature paintings

Layout: Layout of text section, 7 lines. Binding: lacquer, with floral portraits on outside and inside of boards

An album of 41 Indian paintings, chiefly from the Shahjahan period (1628-1658), expressive of the Mughal lineage of Shahjahan; interleaved with 37 calligraphic specimens by Mīr Alī-alkātib, dated 1530 (A.H. 937) on fol. 55a ; and 9 leaves of text, fols. 10-18, containing portions of Jami's Tuhfat al-ahrar. Most of the inset paintings have floral borders, some have inner borders depicting bunches of grapes.

Title: Indian picture album, c. 18th century, ostensibly of portraits of the Mughal emperors from the time of Timur, from the collection of Sir Gore Ouseley. "House of Timur" (spine title).

Format: 34 album leaves with additional material : paper, ill., binding 435 x 300 x 40; leaves various sizes.

Decoration: 34 paintings.

Binding: late 18th-century lacquer binding with gilt arabesques and flowers on green background; inner covers red leather with gilt arabesques and flower border.

An album of 34 leaves containing Indian paintings and calligraphy, with two lithographs inserted, and a manuscript introduction of 5 leaves (fols. viii-xi) and other notes by Sir Gore Ouseley. Paintings numbered in the album following Western style of codex opening on right. The paintings ostensibly depict the Mughal royal lineage, but some have been misidentified.

Provenance: Engraved armorial bookplate of Sir Gore Ouseley on flyleaves at front and back.
