Monitoring

{monitoring equipment}

Many libraries in Oxford have suffered outbreaks of mould and insects. These incidents can be severely disruptive with storage areas having to be closed while the situation is rectified. The best way to prevent and control a mould or insect outbreak is to regulate the environment. To determine how the environment should be regulated it needs to be monitored.

Measuring and recording temperature and relative humidity
Ideally environmental conditions in all library areas should be adequately monitored and recorded with reliable and regularly maintained thermohygrographic or electronic recording equipment. Monitoring is very important because it:

  • documents existing environmental conditions
  • alerts staff to any sudden changes in temperature and humidity
  • supports requests to install environmental controls such as the use of humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans.
  • indicates whether any climate-control equipment present is operating properly and producing the desired conditions

data loggers  ·   thermohygrographs

Suppliers
These companies supply a comprehensive range of environmental monitoring equipment including

  • data loggers
  • flood detectors
  • loggers which record shock and tilt during transit
  • lux and UV measuring equipment
  • polymeters
  • radio telemetry systems
  • thermohygrographs

Their on-line catalogues and printed brochures are very educational.
