HANDLING
LIBRARY MATERIAL

Close books not in use and never put open books face down

{never place a book face down}
do not place another book on an open book

{short description of image}
placing a book face down distresses the binding which
can cause pages to loosen and eventually detach

Place material where it is SHELTERED from sunlight and heat

{sources of heat and light deleterious to library material}
sunlight will fade, bleach or even darken library material
heat will distort, cockle, shrink and accelerate degradation

Window sills and radiators are not suitable places to leave library material even for a short time.
