Remove books from shelves as shown

{if there is no room above the book}
…if there is no room above the book…

{push back the books on either side of the one to be removed}
…push back the books on either side of the one
to be retrieved to expose enough of the spine…

{a firm grip on either side of the spine with thumb and fingers}
…to allow for a firm grip on either side of
the spine with thumb and fingers.

Needless to say the book should be removed, and the
remaining books on the shelf and the bookends readjusted.
