To the writers representation that what may arise from that impost in Ireland should be answered to the Revenue there, it was replied that the duty was so far charged that such a course could not be allowed.
Desires to know of any interruption that may have been given to the receipt of the Tonnage money; and also whether, in the Patent, provision is not made that a fifth part of the product should be added to the Irish Revenue?

Recites further that Sir Adam Loftus and Sir Maurice Eustace, speakers of the then House of Commons, have each received £3,000 for their respective services as Speaker; and Sir Thomas Bramhall, a like sum for his father's service as Speaker of the Peers. Refers to certain meetings of Papists and Nonconformists, formerly reported to the Duke in serveral letters from the Lord Chancellor, and then proceeds: - "Could so notorious a crime have been proved, as preaching the Covenant, I should not have thought it requisite to expect [i.e. to "await"] your orders, but would have inflicted the severest punishment, ... warrantable by law".
Notices the case of Lord Dungannon; and also the probable renewal of by the Crown of Spain of its overtures for Lord Ossory's military service, a proposition which he hopes the Duke will be pleased to promote as a thing desired by the writer, and tending, in many ways, to his advantage.

Has been unsuccesful in the Court of Claims; the lands adjudged, adversely, to the soldiers being worth about £1,000 a year. Humble application to the King for some proportionate grant, out of the lands reserved to His Majesty, seems to be the only means of seeking redress. Hopes that His Majesty will do something to prevent the writer from being in a worse condition than any, of his quality, in the King's dominions. ...
A relation [of a quarrel amongst gamesters, and of an affray ensuing thereon], by Captain Bromidge [So in MS. The name should probably read "Bromwich". The affray occured at the Bear, in Drury Lane. Killegrew the damatist was of the parts, but not in the quarrel] to Mr Bennett, the High-Bailiff of Westminster.

Without any stop or hesitation (which sometimes happens to him in discourse), his Majesty declared himself well satisfied with the Duke's thirty years service to his father & himself. The charge now made was not out of any distrust or displeasure; as would appear by admitting him to the most secret parts of his affairs. ... Although the writer thinks himself honoured to be his father's deputy, he would be loth to be accounted deputy to a person whose birth is below his own. If, until the new Governor shall have taken his oath of office, neither prayers in Churches [should be offered, on his behalf,] nor despatches from hence be addressed to him, it would "preserve a decency" which Lord Ossory would be glad of, but the denial of which will not afflict him.

Has been long waiting at Kilkenny, through the detention of the yacht by adverse winds; but has buried herself with the execution of the Duke's commands, and in such little concerns as she thought she might usefully deal with. The school is very prosperous. Scholars, and of the best quality, come to it from all parts of the kingdom.

Has received the Duke's letters of the 1st and 5th of June. Supposes that her son Ossory is now convinced that his scheme of a military command in Flanders is impracticable; but fears he is bent on establishing his wife and family in London and going himself into Italy; - a plan scarcely less prejudicial, she thinks, to his interest. The house they think of taking is Lord Middleton's.
The grant of £50,000 is "now in some way of being collected", but, in Mr Mathews opinion, the deductions and the charge of interest money together, will reduce the real receipt by one half.

The writer would have done it, in his own time, but that he thought it for Mr Lucas honour that he should be made an officer, after having served for a while as a soldier.

Upon the hearing, in the House of Lords, of the Earl of Orrery's answer to the several articles of his impeachment, it was resolved that the matter be referred to the ordinary course "of the Common Law".
In the progress through Parliament, of the Bill to make provision for the rebuilding of London, a clause was struck out which gave power to levy a tax for that object, without express enactment, but a proviso continuing the import on coal was ordered for insertion.
