The Duke of Ormond has caused intimation to be given to the writer that he adheres strictly to the conditions offered to M. Du Pont by Captain Mathew. If his Grace would but give to the English who are here half of that which is so offered, ... his town of Carrick would, in two years, be the best peopled town in this Kingdom. ... But he has always desired to have there a French colony [In MS.: "une colonie de nôtre langue"]. ...

The regret of the Duke's friends, at his loss as their Governor, is much allayed with the thought of their having escaped my Lord of Orrery, whose positive assertions that he was to have command, ... "have rendered him despicable"...

Repeats the mention of his desire of service abroad. Would be satisfied to command those regiments in Flanders, "that are of the King's subjects; with a reasonable appointment".

Ossory to Ormond

Written from: [Dublin]

Date: 6 March 1669

Shelfmark: MS. Carte 220, fol(s). 449-450

Document type: Holograph

The Duke's directions as to the grant of a concordation to Mr Williamson have been obeyed. Captain Jones has a commission for the command, vacant by the removal of Captain Manley.

Sends a list of letters sent over from the Council, as to which the signification of the King's pleasure is still expected.

Although the writer thinks himself honoured to be his father's deputy, he would be loth to be accounted deputy to a person whose birth is below his own. If, until the new Governor shall have taken his oath of office, neither prayers in Churches [should be offered, on his behalf,] nor despatches from hence be addressed to him, it would "preserve a decency" which Lord Ossory would be glad of, but the denial of which will not afflict him.

Lord Robartes' [In MS. (uniformely but inaccurately): "Roberts"] commission is not yet under seal. ... The King told the writer that he thought it might be fit for him to reserve for himself the disposition of all military offices [in Ireland]. The writer argued against that innovation as not reasonable to Lord Robartes, nor of advantage to his Majesty's service. ... As to that part of the Archbishop's letter of February 23 which relates to Tories and Conventicles, the only present answer the Duke has to make is that he early laid the matter of Conventicles & their consequences before the King.

Shelfmark: MS. Carte 48, fol(s). 354

Document type: Copy

Thinks it not amiss to give some account of the reasons why the writer has turned Lord Meath's ridiculous proceedings in relation to him, into a serious complaint: - (1) The dignity of an Earl, & the name of Councillor, gives a seeming weight (to those who do not know the man) to his "Articles"; (2) The Council, the writer can expose him & his Articles to the derision they are so open to; (3) It is of some relief to our melancholly to put a farce upon the stage ...

Has opposed - all he could - the farming of the arrears of Revenue; but will now let that affair take its fortune. ...

The Lord Lieutenant ... never, or very rarely, appears either in Council or Committee when Irish affairs are under consideration; expecting, the writer thinks, that all should be prepared, without his pains; - to the end, perhaps that hereafter he may blame his "Instructions". ...

Submits the draught of a letter, ... to the Lord Lieutenant & Council here, ... such, he thinks, "as may hasten the payment of that money which is to be raised by virtue of the 'Act of Explanation'"...

His Grace "desires to be satisfied how it can be that all the 'insolvencies' that will happen in the raising of this money should be likely to fall upon his share of it" ... The writer fears that such a probability "will prove too true; for, altho' the sum to be raised has the name of £300,000, yet it is really but £250,000, - that £50,000, which was formerly paid, upon the old 'Act of Settlement' being allowed as part of this sum; and, after the first £200,000 is distributed between the King, your Grace, & the '49 officers, you are, in the next place, to receive £40,000, which is within £2,000 of all that can be expected if there be no insolvences; but if the insolvences shall amount to more than £2,000, then all the rest will be abated out of what is due to your Grace" ...
