When Sir Robert's letter of the 9th arrived, the Duke was in great perplexity, for the sickness of Lady Ossory, which ... it hath pleased God to end in her death. Her kindness and her conduct had gained very much upon the writer's affections, so that he is extremely sensible of the loss.

The riddle 'what was that which, fit for the King to command', it would be hard for the Duke to execute is expounded in the restraints put upon Lord Rochester, "one of which is that he shall not dispose of the lowest commission" ... in the Army. It would, indeed, have been uneasy for the writer to continue, upon those conditions.

The Primate would be glad if Dublin's letters were sealed "with his own seal". It were not amiss, should his Grace so please, to send them, under sealed cover, to Mr Denny Muschamp.

He was not only Judge of Assize, but Secretary in all those counties where he rode circuit. ...

... Did not think that the rebels in the West could have subsisted to this day - which completes three week's since their head [Duke of Monmouth], with about one hundred and fifty men, landed at Lyme [in MS.: "Lime"]. Nor had they, had not all the Deputy Lieutenants of the adjacent counties been here, attending ... Parliament. ... He cannot help thinking that they & the Duke of Albemarle got down [in] time enough to have suppressed that rebellion, with the bare Militia, if tolerable conduct & courage had been employed. ...Now it will cost more time & some lives. ...

... Supposes that the thousand foot sent for out of Ireland can now be better spared thence, than two thousand could have been, into Scotland, when Argyll & his rebellion were on foot. ...

... The Earl was hanged & quartered at Edinburgh; ... - the same kind of death his father procured for the Marquess of Montrose - on the same month, and day of the month & of the week, on which Argyll was brought into Edinburgh to be so treated.

Desires that search be made amongst his papers for certain documents connected with the earlier years of his lieutenancy in Ireland - under the late King - beginning in the year 1662.

Some of these papers, the Duke thinks, were drawn up by way of answer to objections that had been made to his conduct in that Government. One, in particular, he remembers of considerable length, which had been copied fair either by Lord Lanesborough, or by Gascoigne himself, and had been shewn to the Earl of Falmouth, "then in great favour" with the King.

Desires also to see the King's Declaration from Breda; another Declaration of 30 November 1660, relating to Ireland; and some other State Papers named.

Has received Mr Gascoigne's letter of the 7th inst., but is confident it was not Lord Lanesborough's book that was lent to the Bishop of St. Asaph. He would not have lent that book to the Pope. The narrative the writer enquires after ... took up near a quire [of paper] about the middle of a folio [volume?], ... Sends some additional sheets (of the writer's treatise on the affairs of Ireland), ... which "come in after sixty pages are spent in confuting my Lord of Anglesey". ... I have read the twelfth chapter in 'the King's Book', and what his Majesty wrote after the Uxbridge Treaty; also those touches up and down, which are in Your Grace's own writing. ... "It was", he continues, "after writing these sheets, that I accidently cast my eye on that part of Peter Walsh's [in MS.: "Welch"] Letter against the Bishop of Lincoln, which relates to this very subject. ... He there gravely quotes my Lord Castlehaven's review in several instances, as if they were the sense of my Lord Castlehaven" ... [whereas his Lordship expressly says:] "those instances were what the Irish offered ... as reasons why they would, at that time, enter into such a horrid combination against their natural sovereign".

Cannot find, even with that bookseller in London "who has the choicest collection of such papers", either Sir Kenelm Digby's "Negotiation", or Sir Lewis Dyve's ["Letter to the Marquess of Newcastle; The Hague, 1650"]. ...

The exorbitancy of those who charged the Irish with having murdered, in the beginning of the Rebellion, "300,000" English, made the writer use that comparison of ... [the number said to have been] killed by Sylla & Marius within the walls of Rome. ... Were the number only that of Lord Gormanston's "400", ... yet a small repentance would not serve in the case. Nor even if a far greater number of poor, harmless, disarmed country people, of both sexes & all ages, were promiscuously murdered, in several counties, by the other side, would that alleviate the guilt of the first aggressors, in a time of profound peace." ...
