Like information, but verbal only, was earlier received by the Lord Lieutenant - who believes it to be true that there are now, in this Kingdom, at least as many Bishops of the Roman communion, as of the Protestant. He says "at least", because some two or more bishoprics are, in certain cases, united into one Protestant diocese, which in the Roman [hierarchy] are separate. ...

When Sir Robert's letter of the 9th arrived, the Duke was in great perplexity, for the sickness of Lady Ossory, which ... it hath pleased God to end in her death. Her kindness and her conduct had gained very much upon the writer's affections, so that he is extremely sensible of the loss.
The riddle 'what was that which, fit for the King to command', it would be hard for the Duke to execute is expounded in the restraints put upon Lord Rochester, "one of which is that he shall not dispose of the lowest commission" ... in the Army. It would, indeed, have been uneasy for the writer to continue, upon those conditions.

Notices the affliction occasioned to his Grace's servants by reports which continue to come from London. If loyalty so unexampled cannot protect the Duke of Ormond from affronts, what share in them may be expected by those who possess a very small proportion of merit?

Gives expression to the joy felt by all good men in Dublin, on the reception, by the late packet from England, of the news of the welcome given to the Duke of Ormond. Before its arrival, a rumour had been very current that the Duke, upon reaching London, had been sent to the Tower. Only "the unparalleled vicissitudes of our age", thinks the writer, could possible have given currency to such a rumour. Since, there has been some wine drunk in Dublin, to his Grace's health and to the King's.

The Kingdom remains much in the posture in which his Grace left it, save for the existence of such "a throng of jealousies and fears on all sides", as would suffice quite to distract a stranger in the Government of Ireland, unacquainted with "the rise of them".
The Primate would be glad if Dublin's letters were sealed "with his own seal". It were not amiss, should his Grace so please, to send them, under sealed cover, to Mr Denny Muschamp.

Alternately, during forty years, it has been the Duke's fortune, to be reviled, first, as a favourer of Popery; and next, as the greatest persecutor and enemy the Roman Catholics have. Yet he has been enabled to stand firm to his principle of simply preventing the Romanists from having the power to persecute others.

The bearer of this letter, Captain Hewitson ["Huitson" in letter, "Huetson" in the endorsement], is under much affliction of mind concerning a grave misrepresentation of his conduct in interposing between two Irish gentlemen who had quarrelled, under influence of too much wine. Captain Hewitson, the Archbishop believes, did, in fact, venture his life to save theirs.

Lord Arran's letter of the 21st was received yesterday. The same packet brought to Ireland the Earls of Mount-Alexander and of Tyrconnel [the Colonel Richard Talbot of former letters in this collection]. The latter proceeds northwards on Monday next.
A passage in Lord Arran's letter has much amazed the writer, who cannot remember any thing either done or said by him, that might bring his duty to the King in question. He was indeed similarly misrepresented, by Sir Maurice Eustace, in the late King's time, but the attempt to injure him failed.

reports, further, the execution, in Scotland, of Rumbold ("whose wounds were incurable"); the expected execution of the Marquess of Argyle (on the day of the date of this letter); and also the expectation that Ayloffe, "being pretty well recovered, will be in a condition to booted ere long".
Notices the latest news from the West of England, and particularly a proclamation of the Duke of Monmouth, for "the dissolving of this present Parliament".

But the channel of communication in Ireland points to Colonel Fitzpatrick as the informant. And the writer is confident that Fitzpatrick is not upon such terms with the Lord Treasurer, as to be advised with upon Revenue matters.

The intimation sent to the Lords Justices, by the King's command, of the appointment of Lord Clarendon to be Lord Lieutenant of Ireland "has not a little altered the face of things, and has given more heart to the Protestants".
The writer, and his brethren on the Revenue Commission, are grateful to Lord Arran for his influence with the Lord Treasurer.
Tyrconnel is to preside over the Court Martial upon Captain Flower, and others. It is hoped that influence will be used by the Solicitor General on behalf of the accused officers.

Both of the Lords Justices have been suffering from gout, and doing little business. ... "Our other great director [Tyrconnel?] is growing much more easy and gentle."
The ill consequences of disarming the militia are already visible, in acts of violence and of robbery, in several parts of Ireland.
Many projects are being set on foot, the writer is told, by the old proprietors, for disturbing the Act of Settlement. There have been meetings on this matter in Connaught, and in Munster, as well as in Dublin. But they find their difficulties great, and growing. And Irish lawyers have acquired good estates under the Act.

Desires that search be made amongst his papers for certain documents connected with the earlier years of his lieutenancy in Ireland - under the late King - beginning in the year 1662.
Some of these papers, the Duke thinks, were drawn up by way of answer to objections that had been made to his conduct in that Government. One, in particular, he remembers of considerable length, which had been copied fair either by Lord Lanesborough, or by Gascoigne himself, and had been shewn to the Earl of Falmouth, "then in great favour" with the King.
Desires also to see the King's Declaration from Breda; another Declaration of 30 November 1660, relating to Ireland; and some other State Papers named.
