A fortnight after Disraeli presented his budget in the House of Commons (see Item 80b) the budget was defeated and the government resigned. In this letter probably written on 15 December Lord Derby rehearses the various outcomes with Disraeli. Audaciousness is no longer the order of the day [for] '...then temporary respite will be dearly bought; and you had better be defeated honestly in a fairly fought field, than escape under a cloud…'
