The Suez crisis

Dep. Monckton 7, fols. 175-7

Minute by the Secretary of State for Defence, Sir Walter Monckton (1891-1965), [September] 1956. Despite the cabinet's determination to regain British use of the Suez Canal, not all ministers were united behind Eden's apparent willingness to seek a military solution to the Crisis. In this minute, Monckton articulates his reasons for the necessity to exhaust all diplomatic efforts before utilising force as a last resort.
