The Suez crisis

Dep. Monckton 7, fols. 210-11.

Draft letter from Sir Walter Monckton to Sir Anthony Eden, 24 September 1956. The exacting pressures of planning military operations against Egypt and balancing these against his own reservations against such an undertaking, led Monckton into asking Eden to relieve him of the Ministry of Defence. To avoid causing Eden and the Government embarrassment, Monckton accepted a transfer to the post of Postmaster-General.
