| Abstract: Papers of William Beckford (1760-1844), author |
William Beckford (1760-1844) was the author of the oriental tale Vathek and of several volumes of travel-writings, the builder of Fonthill Abbey, and an important collector of paintings, objets d'art and books. Fonthill has almost disappeared, most of his collections and his library have been dispersed, but his writings and this substantial collection of his papers remain.
The papers have been divided into ten groups (as shown in the table of contents). The correspondence includes a long series of letters from Beckford to Gregorio Franchi, in Italian, 1807-28, and a number of letters from Franchi, in Portuguese, 1804-28. Other major correspondents are Beckford's cousin Louisa Beckford; G.F. Beltz of the College of Arms; Beckford's daughter Susan and her husband Alexander, 10th Duke of Hamilton; Robert Hume, one of Beckford's agents; l'abbé Denis Macquin; Diogo, 5th Marqués de Marialva; Maria Anna, Marquesa de Santa Cruz, and Dr Frederick Scholl. There are two letter-books containing copies of letters from Beckford, and many drafts or copies of his letters filed with the letters of individual correspondents in MSS. Beckford c. 26-37. Included in the collection are two groups of letters, from Susan, Lady Hamilton, to her husband, containing a number of references to Beckford, and from various correspondents to the 10th Duke of Hamilton, mainly relating to Beckford's business affairs. Much of the correspondence, including that between Beckford and the Hamiltons, is in French.
The journals are mostly fragmentary, but include the long journal which Beckford kept during his visit to Portugal and Spain in 1787-8, with a later copy containing some entries missing from the original journal. The later copy was not available to Boyd Alexander for his edition of the journal (1954). The travel-writings, often based on the journals, include drafts of Dreams, waking thoughts and incidents (1783), parts of Italy, with sketches of Spain and Portugal (1834), and Recollections of an excursion to the monasteries of Alcobaça and Batalha (1835). The 1783 edition of the Dreams was suppressed; the two copies in the Beckford papers, particularly the large-paper copy, contain numerous alterations for its publication in 1834 as part of Italy.
The literary papers (the prose titles listed in the index, under Beckford, Prose works) include a volume of 'Orations', c.1774, a fair copy of The long story (or The vision), drafts of 'The dome of the setting sun', 'Fonthill foreshadowed', 'L'Esplendente', the 'Histoire de Darianoc', Epitaphs, and the Liber veritatis. A number of short literary pieces in MS. Beckford c. 48 are drafts for a continuation of The long story. There is a small fragment of the manuscript of Vathek, an English translation of part of the text by John Lettice, and several copies of the Episodes of Vathek. Many of the literary manuscripts are discussed in detail by André Parreaux, William Beckford, auteur de Vathek, 1760-1844. Étude de la création littéraire (Paris, 1960). They and the travel-writings are briefly described (with a few minor exceptions) in the Index of English literary manuscripts vol. 3, 1700-1800, Part I, compiled by Margaret M. Smith (Mansell, 1986), pp. 21-31.
Smaller groups of papers include translations from the Arabian Nights, a collection of Beckford's reading-notes, several volumes containing catalogues of his libraries and inventories of his property (including books) in 1844, music composed or collected by Beckford, and twenty-three boxes of newspaper cuttings. The miscellaneous papers include many drawings and sketches by Beckford (and a few drawings by Sir John Soane, James Wyatt and Henry Goodridge), and the manuscript of Cyrus Reddings's 'Memoirs of William Beckford', differing substantially from the published version. The last section of the papers contains a few deeds relating to Beckford's property, and two deeds relating to the marriage settlement of Susan Beckford (Lady Hamilton).
Many of the papers were originally arranged in wrappers by Beckford, each with its descriptive title or list of contents, but a number have been moved from their wrappers (possibly by Boyd Alexander, whose pencil notes are on many of the wrappers, and on some of the other leaves). Unless an item is described as bound, or sewn, it can be assumed that it consists of loose single sheets or bifolia. The contents of most of the old Hamilton Papers (HP) boxes, usually cited in publications hitherto, can be identified from Conspectus 2, or from the index.
On Beckford's death in 1844, the papers passed to his daughter, Lady Hamilton. They remained in the possession of the Dukes of Hamilton until 1977, although most of them had been for many years in the custody of Boyd Alexander. In 1977 the Duke of Hamilton sold the papers at Sotheby's (6 July 1977, lot 272), where they were bought by B.H. Blackwell Ltd. Blackwell's deposited the papers in the Bodleian from October 1977 until December 1979, when they took them back into their own custody.
The Bodleian has two other small collections of papers relating to Beckford, as well as a few scattered letters and papers, including:
Items 1-5, and most of the printed books, were bequeathed by Boyd Alexander in 1980 (see Bodleian Library Record, 10 (1978-82), p. 267). Items 6-8 were bequeathed, with some printed books, by John Hodgkin in 1930 (see Bodleian Quarterly Record, 6 (1929-31), p. 222).
Note: The place of publication of works cited in the catalogue is London unless otherwise stated.
Includes some of Beckford's wrappers, a few sketches by Beckford, and a few notes and a number of sketches by Franchi, with (c. 5, fol. 34) a note in an unidentified hand 'Lettres à Franchi personne doit les voir xbre 1846', and (c. 11, fols. 167-9) a note, 1857, and a letter, n.d., concerning the purchase of parts of the correspondence. Translated extracts from the letters are printed in Life at Fonthill, ed. Boyd Alexander (1957).

26 Oct.-3 Nov. 1780 Shelfmark: MS. Beckford f. 1 Extent: 26 leaves, including blank interleaves Binding: stiffened marbled wrappers Scope and Content: The entries for 26-29 Oct. and 1-2 Nov. (fols. 2-6v, 23v-5) struck through, and written up in the draft of Dreams (MS. Beckford d. 4, below), the entries for 30-31 Oct. (fols. 6v-21) marked 'to be inserted' [at fol. 77v of Dreams]. The contents correspond roughly to Dreams (1783), pp. 190-211, and Italy (1834), i, pp. 223-45. The journal breaks off in mid-sentence, with a note (fol. 26) 'Vid: Book 4 for the continuation'. 'Book 4', which has not been found, evidently contained the entries for part of 3 Nov., and 4-8 Nov. Fol. 21 is reproduced in Guy Chapman and John Hodgkin, A bibliography of William Beckford (1930), p. 13. |
| Draft, with many alterations, of a large part of
Dreams, waking thoughts, and
incidents
(1783) Shelfmark: MS. Beckford d. 4 Extent: iv + 85 leaves Scope and Content: Begins with the letter of 21 June 1780 (letter II, pp. 5-12 of the printed text), and ending with 9 Nov. 1780 (corresponding to 6 Nov., pp. 216-19). The entries for part of June and July (pp. 19-52 of the printed text) are lacking, except for one leaf, fol. 11 (pp. 37-8), and a note on fol. 10 refers to 'Book No.1' (not found). The entries for 30-31 Oct. and 3-8 Nov. are also lacking, and Beckford has noted (fol. 77v) 'Book No.3' (MS. Beckford f. 1) and (fol. 80) 'Vid: Book No 3 last page Novr. 3d then No.4'. There are several contemporary paginations of the manuscript. Three leaves, probably not kept here by Beckford, contain (fol. 83) rough notes identified by Boyd Alexander as notes for the 1780 tour, and (fols. 84-5) drafts of two letters, 29 and 30 June 1782, printed among the 'Additional letters' in Dreams, pp. 291-4. |
| An uncut copy of the suppressed edition of
Dreams, waking thoughts, and
incidents (1783) Shelfmark: MS. Beckford c. 40 Binding: Marbled boards, lacking spine, frontispiece and engraving of St. Bruno Scope and Content: Contains a number of alterations in Beckford's hand to words and phrases, many of them not entered in the second copy (MS. Beckford c. 41), and some drafts of alterations to short passages, a few entered in the second copy. Pp. 135a-b (an inserted leaf) contain notes, not in Beckford's hand, about St. Bruno, with references to printed sources, and (p. 135b) a rough draft of a passage re-drafted in the second copy (c. 41, p. 136b). The end flyleaf and pastedown contain pencil notes - a few lines of prose, partly erased, and some lines of verse. Related Material:Another copy, containing the two engravings missing from the Beckford copies, was bequeathed to the Bodleian by John Hodgkin in 1932 ([pr.bk.] Arch. H d. 14). Hodgkin's copy contains a letter from Beckford to George Clarke, 1833, and a note by Clarke on a flyleaf, giving the names of the owners of the 'four' surviving copies of the work, the rest of the impression having been 'purposely burnt at Fonthill in 1801'; only one of Beckford's copies is included in the list. The text was heavily revised by Beckford for inclusion in the first volume of Italy; with sketches of Spain and Portugal (2 vols., 1834). The original text was reprinted by Guy Chapman as vol. I of The travel-diaries of William Beckford, 2 vols. (Cambridge, 1928). |

The cuttings, dated between 1780 and 1847, were for the most part collected by Beckford, and folded into packets inside wrappers. A list of the contents by Beckford on the front of each wrapper gives the subject of each cutting (sometimes within a pen-and-ink frame or border), the name and date of the newspaper, and occasionally a comment. Many of the cuttings were made in 1839-44; many of the earlier ones were evidently arranged, or re-arranged, years after their dates - for example, a cutting of 1819 is enclosed in wrappers watermarked 1838 (MS. Beckford c. 69, fol. 1). A few of the earlier wrappers have subject headings by Beckford 'Fonthill Abbey', or 'Miscellaneous'. Some of the principal subjects covered are: theatre and opera; books - mainly travel, biography and novels; royalty - especially the travels of Queen Victoria in 1842-3; obituaries - especially of aristocrats and collectors; Napoleon; Portugal; Spain; some politics; examples of intolerance; oddities; dukes and duchesses; and some crime. There are a few small sketches by Beckford on some wrappers, including (c. 63, fol. 121) a pen-and-ink caricature, possibly of the Duke of Sussex, and pen-and-ink sketches of (c. 83, fol. 109) an 'antediluvian caterpillar 27 yards long', and (c. 67, fol. 139, c. 82, fol. 39, c. 83, fol. 13) small landscapes. A few letters and papers found amongst the cuttings have been removed and placed with other manuscripts; drawings by Beckford on scraps of newspapers, and printed items found here are now MS. Beckford c. 84, fols. 118-41, 152-97.
Arrangement: The packets have been kept together as they were found, although this arrangement may possibly have been made after Beckford's death. The numbers in brackets after each entry are the box and packet numbers (12/1, 13/5 etc.) assigned or copied by Boyd Alexander in the 1950s. Within each packet the wrappers have now been arranged in chronological order by the earliest date on each wrapper; within the wrappers the cuttings have been arranged in the order of Beckford's list of contents (or chronologically, when there is no wrapper). There does not appear to be any significance in the arrangement within the packets or wrappers.| Cuttings,
