Acquisition

The papers came to the Bodleian Library at several different dates from several different sources. MS. Top. Oxon. b. 121 was bought from the executors of F.P. Morrell in 1925. MSS. Top. Som. 81 and Ch. Wilts. 327-34 were bought from the Countess of Abingdon, through E.H. Tipping in 1934. MSS. Top. Berks. b. 13, Rolls Berks. 41-4, Rolls Oxon. 158-64 and the maps were bought from E.H. Tipping in 1936. MS. Top. Berks. e. 21 was given by J.C.B. Gamlen in 1942. MSS. Top. Berks. a. 5, b. 16-39, e. 22; Top. gen. b. 63, c. 88-9; Top. Organizational History:

The North Weston estate was sold by Francis Clerke in 1753, and acquired in 1755 by Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough, who settled it on Lord Charles Spencer. It was bought by Montagu Bertie, 5th Earl of Abingdon in 1836 and sold by Sir Francis Bertie in 1913.
