Alexander Chalmers (1759-1834) was a biographer and miscellaneous writer. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
Notebooks of Alexander Chalmers, containing literary references for the lives of well-known persons, chiefly British, most of whom are contained in the 1812 edition of Chalmers's General Biographical Dictionary. The contents of the notebooks are arranged in order of the first letter only of the names, but each volume has an index at end.
The notebooks were bought from Messrs. Bull and Auvache on 11 April 1889, for £1 1s.
