Biographical History

John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland (1784-1859) served in the British army in Sicily, 1806-7, and in the Peninsular, 1808-10; he was minister plenipotentary in Florence, 1814-30, and resident minister at Berlin, 1841-51. See Dictionary of National Biography.

Scope and Content

The correspondence relates to Greece, mainly 1815-30 (MS. Eng. c. 4861), Florence, 1829-38 (MS. Eng. c. 4862) and orders and honours conferred on Westmorland, 1805-48 (MS. Eng. c. 4863), with correspondence with Lord Aberdeen, 1828-48 (MS. Eng. d. 2577).

Arrangement

The correspondence was arranged and uniformly bound in half black morocco gilt, marbled boards, in 1858 and (MS. Eng. d. 2577) 1859. Each volume has a list of contents which summarises the subject matter of each item.

Bought, with MS. Eng. misc. b. 433, fols. 36-9, with the help of the Friends of the Bodleian, Christie's, 29 June 1994, lot 98.
