Botanical water-colours by Mary Maria Fielding with accompanying, descriptive notes possibly by her husband, Henry Borron Fielding, 1830-3 and undated.
Mary Maria Simpson was the daughter of John Simpson, merchant, of Lancaster. She was baptised on 22 May 1804; married the botanist, Henry Borron Fielding, in Liverpool on 21 Dec.1826; and died on 22 Feb. 1895.
The six volumes contain c.530 botanical water-colours drawn by Mary Maria Fielding. The drawings (about 19 × 15 cm), some of which are on 'Turnbulls Superfine London Board' , are pasted into the volumes and the facing pages contain notes about many of the drawings, often giving a date and location for the plant. These notes were possibly made by Mrs. Fielding's husband Henry Borron Fielding, whose library is in the Sherardian Library of Plant Taxonomy (formerly Plant Sciences Library) and herbarium is in the Department of Plant Sciences, Oxford.
An account, possibly by John Clay, who was the husband of Henrietta Fielding (sister of Henry Borron Fielding), of Fielding's herbarium, and drawings of plants within it, can be found in MSS. Sherard 389-97 (Department of Plant Sciences).
