Other Finding Aids

Falconer Madan, et al., A summary catalogue of western manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford which have not hitherto been catalogued in the Quarto series (7 vols. in 8 [vol. II in 2 parts], Oxford, 1895-1953; reprinted, with corrections in vols. I and VII, Munich, 1980), vol. V, nos. 29015-8.

A detailed calendar of the papers is in the appendix to the 2nd Report of the Historical Manuscripts Commission, (London, 1871), pp. 49-63.

Custodial History

The collection consists chiefly of papers acquired by John Packer, secretary of the Duke of Buckingham, including some which came to him when he acquired the estate of Hackness in Yorkshire. These papers, or part of them, descended with Hackness to the Hobys and Sydenhams in 1640, in 1707 to John van den Bempde, and then to the Pitts of Boconnoc.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The collection was presented to the Library by George Matthew Fortescue in 1872.
