Biographical / Historical

John Francis Cradock, later Caradoc, 1st Baron Howden (1762-1839) was a general in the British army. He was commander-in-chief at Madras, 1803-7, and commander of the army in Portugal, 1808. He was Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, 1811-14. Further details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

John Hobart Caradoc, 2nd Baron Howden (1799-1873), son of the 1st Baron, was also a general. He was minister plenipotentiary at Madrid, 1850-8. Further details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
