Biographical History

John Francis Cradock, later Caradoc, 1st Baron Howden (1762-1839) was a general in the British army. He was commander-in-chief at Madras, 1803-7, and commander of the army in Portugal, 1808. He was Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, 1811-14. Further details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

John Hobart Caradoc, 2nd Baron Howden (1799-1873), son of the 1st Baron, was also a general. He was minister plenipotentiary at Madrid, 1850-8. Further details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Scope and Content

The papers comprise official correspondence and papers of the1st Baron Howden, mainly as an army commander in Madras and Portugal, 1806-9, and as Governor of the Cape of Good Hope, 1811-14; and of his son, the 2nd Baron Howden, as minister plenipotentiary in Madrid, 1850-8.
