The members of the Madan family represented in this collection are Judith Madan, née Cowper,(1702-81),
poet, and Martin Madan (1700-56), Lieutenant-Colonel and MP. Also included are Judith's daughters Maria
Frances Cecilia Cowper (1726-97), poet, and Penelope Maitland (1730-1805), and Penelope's daughter-in-law,
Helen Maitland.
