    request

Several groups of Monson's papers were acquired by the Library, 1972-93. On the creation of this electronic version of the catalogue, the opportunity has been taken to incorporate the descriptions of these papers.

The papers acquired from the 11th Baron Monson (MSS. Eng. hist. b. 243, c. 1161-1290) were formerly arranged in bundles (some wrapped in newspapers of 1904-8), and grouped in boxes and trunks according to Monson's various posts. This arrangement has been followed for the general correspondence, bills and business papers, as follows: 1881-4, Uruguay and Argentina; 1884-8, Denmark; 1888-92, Greece; 1892-3, Belgium; 1893, London; 1893-6, Austria-Hungary, and 1896-1904, France. Within each of these groups, the general correspondence is arranged alphabetically in one sequence (with unidentified correspondents at the end), and is followed by bills and business papers in a second alphabetical sequence. These groups are followed by letters from Monson's brother, William, 7th Baron Monson (created Viscount Oxenbridge, 1886), 1882-98; letters from Monson's wife, Eleanor ('Elaine'), née Munro, 1884-1903; other family letters to Monson, and miscellaneous papers.

Some printed items have been transferred to the Department of Printed Books, and a few items to the John Johnson collection; (Monson's?) spectacles (J. J. artefacts: patent medicines: 7); two packets of Suchard chocolate (J. J. artefacts: food: A1: chocolate and chocolate boxes) - see MS. Eng. hist. c. 1288, fol. 67, for covering note; two packets of Danish playing cards (J. J. playing cards 4).
