William Heather (? 1563-1627, details can be found in the Dictionary of National Biography) founded the Professorship of Music at Oxford in 1626, and provided also the nucleus of a Music School Library in connection with it, by bequeathing certain books printed and manuscript, of which two lists still exist. The Library grew by gradual accretion, and in 1885 was transferred by a statute to the Bodleian.
