Robert Southey (1774-1843) was a poet, journalist and biographer. His brother, Henry Herbert Southey (1783-1865), was a physician. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

The papers were bought at Sotheby's in 1927 and given to the Library by the Friends of the Bodleian.
