Biographical History

Samuel Wilberforce (1805-73) was Bishop of Oxford from 1845 to 1869, and Bishop of Winchester, 1869 to 1873 - see Dictionary of National Biography.

Scope and Content

This collection comprises diaries kept by Wilberforce from 1853 until his death in 1873. The diaries are written in Letts's Diary No. 9, each with a note that it was examined by Reginald G. Wilberforce, who completed the Life of his father. Some have newspaper cuttings inserted, and notes by Samuel Wilberforce of interesting conversations, all have a list of notable entries at the end.
