Sir Cyril Handley Bird, CBE (1955), Kt (1958), was born in 1896. After serving with the British Red Cross Society during the First World War (1915-1919) Bird began his career in Africa. He initially worked in Lagos, Nigeria, but later moved to Uganda where he was President of the Uganda Chamber of Commerce (1942-1946), a Member of the Uganda Legislative Council (Representative 1947-1955), and Minister of Commerce and Works for the Uganda Government (August 1955-October 1958). He was also a founder member of the Uganda Electricity Board (1948-1955). Sir Bird died in 1969.
