John Brayne-Baker, CMG (1957), was born on the 13 August 1905. He was educated at Marlborough College, and Worcester College, Oxford.

In 1928 he entered the Colonial Administrative Service as a cadet. He was posted to Nigeria where he held the posts of Assistant District Officer (1928), District Officer (1938), Senior District Officer (1948), and Resident (1953). In 1954 he became Senior Resident and Deputy Commissioner of the Cameroons, a post he held until his retirement from the Service in 1956.

After retirement from the Service, Brayne-Baker served as a Member of Tiverton Rural District Council (1959-1974) and Tiverton District Council (1973-1976). He died on the 10 January 1997.
