Sir Geoffrey Francis Taylor Colby was born on the 25 March 1901 and educated at Charterhouse, Godalming, Surrey and Clare College, Cambridge. He entered the British Colonial Administrative Service in Nigeria in 1925 as an Administrative Officer and went on to serve as: Principal Assistant Secretary (acting) (1939); Secretary, Nigeria Supply Board (1942); Director of Supplies (1943); Administrative Secretary, Nigeria (1945); Acting Chief Secretary to Government and Governor's Deputy on various occasions (1945-1947), and Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Nyasaland (1948-1956). He was awarded the CMG (1947) and the KCMG (1949). Sir Colby died on the 22 December 1958.
