Biographical History

Dr. James Clyde Mitchell (1918-95) was Director of the Rhodes Livingstone Institute (1952-5), Professor of African Studies and Sociology at the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (1955-65), Professor of Urban Studies at the University of Manchester (1966-73) and Fellow of Nuffield College Oxford (1973-85). The papers comprise A. Course and Lecture Notes, 1938-86, B. Working data and field notes from Copperbelt Study interviews, 1950-5, C. Working data and research notes 1932-83 and D. Reports, Papers and Addresses, 1944-81.

Many of the descriptions are based on titles written on the folders which originally contained the papers, now mainly removed.
