Administrative/Biographical History

Sir John Dalzell Rankine was born on the 8 June 1907 and educated at Christ's College, Christchurch, New Zealand and at Exeter College, Oxford, England where he received a BA in 1930. In 1939 he married Janet Grace Austin.

Sir Rankine entered the Colonial Administrative Service as a Cadet in Uganda in 1931 and subsequently served as: Assistant Secretary of the East African Governors Conference (1939); First Assistant Secretary (1942); Assistant Colonial Secretary in Fiji (1942); Colonial Secretary in Barbados (1945); Chief Secretary in Kenya (1947-1951) and Chairman of the Development and Reconstruction Authority. He was also British Resident in Zanzibar (1952-1954); administered the Governments of Barbados and Kenya on various occasions, and was Governor of the Western Region in Nigeria (1954-1960). During his career Rankine was awarded the CMG (1947), KCMG (1954), Brilliant Star of Zanzibar, 1st Class (1954), KCVO (1956) and KStJ (1958). Sir Rankine died on the 19 February 1987.

Scope and Content

File on constitutional reform in Zanzibar (1952-1954), while British Resident, and 10 files as Governor of Western Region, Nigeria (1954-1960), including regular despatches to the Colonial Office and personal correspondence about pensions etc.
