In 1994 the first multiracial elections were held in South Africa. The material listed is the result of the library's efforts to obtain as wide a spread as possible of election campaign papers, from a variety of political parties.
General policy documents and statements, leaflets, newspaper advertisements, etc., African National Congress; manifestos, general policy documents/statements, leaflets, etc., Democratic Party; manifestos, general policy document, leaflets, newspaper and newspaper advertisements, National Party; general policy documents/ statements, leaflets, information documents and newspaper advertisements, Inkatha Freedom Party; records relating to other political parties and associated organisations; posters, newspapers and ephemera - all 1990s.
The library wrote to all the political parties which were registered to contest the elections, many of which donated a selection of their publications and other materials. A number of South African libraries donated duplicates from their own collections. The South African Friends of the Bodleian collected on the library's behalf, as did many individuals. The library also purchased a considerable quantity of material, including many of the posters, through one of its regular South African book suppliers. The decision was also taken to collect non-party material and some older material where this was deemed relevant to the election process.Access Conditions
