The series of Tanganyika files, 1945-1950, contain memoranda and correspondence relating to provincial medical officers' conferences, the organisation of rural medical services, medical provision for ex-servicemen, leprosy, trypanosomiasis control, the training of African staff and medical manpower planning, preventive health services, salaries, grants in aid to missions, rivalry between the Red Cross and St John Ambulance, recurrent conflicts with subordinates and Secretariat, and Sneath's retirement.

Abstract

Papers relating to Dr Paul A.T. Sneath's medical service in the Gold Coast, British Guiana, Tanganyika and Canada.

Biographical / Historical

Paul Alfred Turner Sneath was born on the 16 February 1898 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was educated at Parkdale Collegiate Institute, Toronto, 1911-1915, at Toronto University, 1917-1921, and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 1923.

Having worked at Toronto General Hospital, 1921-1922, in 1923 Sneath joined the Colonial Medical Service as a Medical Officer in the Gold Coast. He resigned from this post in 1927 and, in the same year, became a Demonstrator, later Lecturer, in the Department of Hygiene and Preventative Medicine at the University of Toronto. In addition to this post Sneath became, in 1928, a Research Assistant, later Research Associate, at Connaught Research Laboratories.

In 1937 Sneath was re-appointed to the Colonial Medical Service and served in British Guiana as First Assistant Government Medical Officer of Health (1937-1938) and then as Deputy Director of Medical Services and Registrar General (1938-1940). In 1940 he was released to serve in the Canadian Army at the request of the Canadian Government but was recalled to the Colonial Medical Service in 1944 at the request of the Colonial Office. From 1944-1945 Sneath served as Deputy Director of Medical Services in Tanganyika Territory, Acting Director of Medical Services (March 1945), and Substantive Director of Medical Services (June 1945-1951).

Sneath retired from the Colonial Medical Service in 1951 and returned to Canada. He died in 1976.

The papers were bequeathed to the Bodleian Library in 1976.
