Biographical history

Hilary Bailey (1936-2017) was a writer, literary critic for the Guardian and, during the 1970s, an occasional editor of New Worlds. Bailey was born in Bromley and attended Cambridge University but lived in London for a large part of her adult life and was particularly associated with the Notting Hill area, which served as a setting for several of her novels. In 1962 Bailey married the sci-fi writer Michael Moorcock and had three children, Kate, Sophie and Max. Moorcock and Bailey divorced in the 1970s. Bailey’s early work was largely science fiction, including the short story 'The Fall of Frenchy Steiner', and much of it was published in the science fiction periodical New Worlds.

Bailey’s later work spans several genres, including contemporary depictions of life, as in Polly Put the Kettle on, retellings of historical stories, such as Cassandra: Princess of Troy, continuations and reimaginings of classic novels, including Miles and Flora and Frankenstein’s Bride, and the political thriller The 51st State.

Graham Hall (1947-1980) was a science fiction writer, and both a contributor and occasional editor of New Worlds. Hall became a friend of both Bailey and Moorcock through his early enthusiasm in science fiction writing and zines. He studied English and Philosophy at Sussex University and later won a scholarship to Smith College in the US, becoming one of the first men accepted after the college became co-educational. He then travelled extensively, occasionally basing himself in Spain, before moving to the US and settling in LA.

Scope and Content

The archive comprises Hilary Bailey’s correspondence both personal and business, her literary papers and miscellaenous papers.

He personal correspondence consists of letters from friends, fellow New Worlds contributors and editors, other writers and also family. Correspondents include Marilyn Hacker, 1976-1994, n.d.; Jim Cawthorn,1979-1998; and Gill Edmonds, 1986-2005, n.d., among others, as well as a significant number of letters from her ex-husband, Michael Moorcock, 1969-1998. Business correspondence dates from 1969-2002 and regards the writing, publishing and advertising of her books, giving an insight into publishing practices during this era.

Her literary papers include initial manuscripts and corrected typescripts and in some cases early research toward her novels.

Graham Hall’s archive is primarily personal correspondence with his fellow New Worlds contributor and friend, Charles Platt spanning 1964 to 1978, as well as science fiction writers including Brian Aldiss and Ray Bradbury. Also included are a number of short stories regarding football and various short science fiction stories

Arrangement

The archive is arranged into several series including: diaries comprised of Bailey’s diaries from 1987-2009 arranged chronologically; correspondence, including personal correspondence and business correspondence; literary papers, including short stories, draft manuscripts and typescripts, workbooks and research toward novels. These are arranged chronologically; printed and miscellaneous papers, including cuttings from newspapers regarding her work, tickets for events, particularly related to her work at The Guardian, and art openings.

The final series, papers of Graham Hall, is comprised of Graham Hall’s correspondence his writing.
