Biographical history

Walter Benington (1872-1936) was an art photographer, a leading member of the co-called 'Linked Ring' group of photographers, his photographs being exhibited in Britain, Europe and U.S.A. By 1910 he became one of the country's best portrait photographers, working for Elliot & Fry of Baker Street in London, as well as being a frequent contributor to periodicals, notably the Sphere.

Scope and Content

The collection comprises 200 glass plates of Benington's Oxbridge personalities and worthies of the wider world of literature, politics, the sciences and the arts. The portraits date mainly from 1920-1, but there is a group for 1914 and a smaller group for 1926. Many of the portraits were published in the Sphere, and in particular, 4 and 11 June 1921 (Cambridge personalities) and 21 and 28 October 1922 (Oxford personalities). These portraits represent leading academics in Oxbridge at the time. There are no written records to record their acquistion, but there is good reason to suppose that Benington's friend and neighbour in Headington, Oxford, Mr Archie Utin must have brought them into the Library in c.1977, having previously being entrusted with the plates by Benington's widow.

Acquisition

Without written documentation the precise details cannot be ascertained, but there is circumstantial evidence that they were donated/bequeathed by Walter Benington's neighbour, Mr. Archie Utin in 1977 [following his death that year], the plates having been entrusted to him by Benington's widow. He certainly donated Benington prints to the National Portrait Gallery, previoulsy confirming he had acquired them in a letter to them in 1972.

Custodial History

Plates taken by Walter Benington and following his death entrusted to his friend and neighbour, Mr. Archie Utin.
