Administrative/Biographical History

Geoffrey Dawson (1874-1944) was born George Geoffrey Robinson, but changed his name to Dawson in 1917 when he inherited the family estate in Yorkshire from his aunt, Margaret Dawson. He was editor of The Times, 1912-19 and 1923-41. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Scope and Content

Dawson's papers consist of personal papers, correspondence, printed papers, newspapers and photographs. The personal papers include a series of diaries, which he began to keep in 1893, and provides an interesting overall view of his life. Although the collection contains some material relating to the administration of The Times, the bulk of the papers are political in content. The collection also includes a small amount of his wife's correspondence.
