After serving as a secondary school teacher, 1959-79, Derek Enright successfully stood as Labour candidate for Leeds in the first European Parliament election, 1979. He acted as Labour spokesman for third world affairs and womens' rights in the European Parliament, 1979-84. He was appointed by the European Economic Community (EEC) Development and Co-operation committee to compile a report on the future of EEC economic and commercial relations with Namibia, 1984-5. In 1984, Enright unsuccessfully contested the Kent East seat in the European Parliament election. He went on to serve as EEC delegate to Guinea Bissau, 1985-7 and as Special Advisor to the EEC on The Third World, 1988-91. He was elected MP for Hemsworth at a by-election in 1991. He died in 1995.
