| Abstract: Correspondence of Cordelia Curle (1879-1970), with additional papers of H.A.L Fisher (1865-1940), historian and politician, and additional papers of the Fisher family. |
Herbert William Fisher (1826-1903) served as the personal tutor to the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII, during his undergraduate studies at Christ Church, Oxford. From 1860-70 he acted as his private secretary. In 1870 he was appointed Vice-Warden of the Stannaries. His wife Mary Louisa Jackson's family included a number of prominent Victorian figures, notably her aunt Julia Margaret Cameron. Together they had eleven children.
Cordelia (1879-1970) was the youngest of the four daughters. In 1912 she married the traveller and writer Richard Curle with whom she had one son, Adam Curle (1916-2006). The couple divorced in 1922.
For H.A.L. Fisher, see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. For the catalogue of the main archive, see M. Clapinson and T.D. Rogers, Summary Catalogue of Post-Medieval Western Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library Oxford. Acquisitions 1916-1975, (Oxford, 1991), vol. II, nos. 46901-47151 (see the collection-level description).
Sir William Wordsworth Fisher (1875-1937) joined the Royal Navy in 1890 and rose to the rank of Vice-Admiral. (See DNB for a full biography).
Charles Dennis Fisher (1887-1916) served as Senior Censor at Christ Church, Oxford, 1910-14. At the outbreak of the First World War he joined the Red Cross and served as an orderly and interpreter on the Western Front. In August 1915 he joined the Royal Navy. He was killed at the battle of Jutland in May 1916. Edmund Fisher (1871-1918), an architect by profession, also died on active service during the war in 1918.
Amongst the other Fisher children, Adeline (1870-1951) married the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edwin (1883-1947) became Chairman of Barclays Bank.
The papers comprise A. Correspondence of Cordelia Curle, c. 1890-1955; B. Additional papers of H.A.L. Fisher, 1879, 1890-1943; C. Additional Fisher family papers, 1810, 1845, 1862-1947, 1957, 1972, 1992.
