Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers of Maurice Brinsmead Latey (1915-91), chief commentator, BBC External Services, 1972-5. Latey was a central figure in the BBC's external services from 1939 until his death in 1991, specialising in particular in broadcasting to Eastern Europe. Latey also wrote and lectured extensively and was especially interested in totalitarian regimes and the relationship between religion and politics. The collection includes BBC radio scripts, correspondence and papers relating to the BBC, Latey's notes and drafts for his books, articles and lectures and sketches and doodles. The collection is arranged as follows: correspondence and papers relating to (A) the BBC, (B) publications, (C) religious issues and (D) lectures, with (E) miscellaneous and personal. Where possible the original arrangement within the files has been retained.

Items from Latey's BBC visit to the United States to cover the mid-term elections, 1970, consisting of a Nixon press pass, a Stevenson press pass, a Reagan press pass and two Adlai [Stevenson] III badges are Janitor's list of Library portraits and objects, no. 735.

Restrictions on Access

To comply with BBC regulations BBC internal correspondence and papers after December 1973 are closed; broadcast material is open. Latey's personal correspondence after Dec. 1979 is closed.

Acquisition

The papers were given by Latey's widow, Barbara Latey, 1994.
