Abstract

Commonplace Books of T.E. Lawrence and Charlotte Frances Shaw

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935), was an archaeologist, soldier and author. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography. Charlotte Frances Shaw (d. 1943) was the wife of George Bernard Shaw.

Custodial History

In 1927 Lawrence gave his book, 'Minorities', to Mrs. Shaw, who gave Lawrence her book at the same time. Mrs. Shaw gave 'Minorities' to J.G. Wilson (Lawrence's executor) in 1940. In 1960 Wilson sold both volumes to W.M.L. Escombe.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

W.M.L. Escombe bequeathed the volumes to the Library, where they were received in 1974.
