Margaret H. Oertel was the wife of Frederick Oscar Oertel, engineer in the Indian Public Works Department.

Letters and papers of Margaret H. Oertel, consisting of:

• Letters from Margaret Oertel in India to her family in England, written as a journal, mainly typescript, 1915-19
• Letters and papers of Margaret Oertel, 1900-42, including some photographs of Indian scenes
• Notebooks of Margaret Oertel, compiled in India, containing occasional diary entries and descriptions of special occasions and events, 1903-6, 1905-12, 1915

The papers were given to the Indian Institute in 1967, and transferred to the Bodleian in 1975.
