Organizational History

The society was founded in 1870 to provide 'mutual help in the study of the Greek and Latin languages and literature'. The initial rules state that there were to be two meetings per term and members were to pay an annual subscription of 10 shillings. Women were admitted to the society in 1936. At the time of deposit, the society still meets three times a term, and has an annual subscription of £5.

Scope and Content

The volumes contain brief minutes, usually comprising: the date and place of the meeting; the names of members present; the title of the paper presented and by whom; any proposals, including new members. They also contain lists of members, and financial information.
