Biographical/Historical

Sir Frederick Maurice Powicke was born in Northumberland in 1879 and educated at Stockport grammar school, the University of Manchester and Balliol College, Oxford.

Powicke was Professor of Modern History at Queen's University Belfast, 1909-1919, Professor of Medieval History at the University of Manchester, 1919-1928, and Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Oxford, 1928-1947. He published works on British and European medieval history and served as President of the Royal Historical Society from 1933 to 1937. He died in 1963.

Scope and Content

The archive comprises general correspondence, subject files and files relating to Powicke's academic work including lectures, essays and research notes.

Acquisition

The archive was received partly from Sir Frederick Maurice Powicke in 1960 and partly from the History Faculty Library in 1982 on the instructions of Sir Richard Southern.

Custodial History

Part of the archive was at Oxford University's History Faculty Library until 1982.
