Letters, 1948-1954, from A.N. Prior in New Zealand to David Raphael in Glasgow discussing philosophical subjects. With a testimonial for Prior written by Raphael in May 1949 and the carbon copy of a letter from Raphael in January 1950 with detailed comments on a book by Prior (probably Logic and the basis of ethics published in 1949).

Abstract

Letters from A.N. Prior to David Raphael

Biographical / Historical

Arthur Norman Prior (1914-1969) was a philosopher from New Zealand. Details are given in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

David Daiches Raphael (1916-2015) was a graduate of the University of Oxford. During the war he worked at the Ministry of Labour and National Service and then spent three years as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Otago, New Zealand. In 1949 he joined the University of Glasgow as a lecturer in moral philosophy and then senior lecturer. He was Edward Caird Professor of Political and Social Philosophy at Glasgow from 1960 to 1970 and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Reading, 1970-1973, and at Imperial College, London, 1973-1983.
