Alexander Souter (1873-1949) was Professor of New Testament Greek and Exegesis at Oxford, 1903-11, and Professor of Humanity at Aberdeen, 1911-37. Details are given in Who Was Who.

The letters were bequeathed to the Library by Souter in 1949.
