Deed of Arbitration relating to a land dispute between the Earls of Arundel, Pembroke and Shrewsbury, 29 Nov. 1631

The dispute was arbitrated by the Earl of Bedford, John Selden, William Petre and William Noye. The manors disputed were Rockwardine [ Wrockwardine], Cheswardine, Taseley [ Tasley] , Hulton, (possibly Hilton) in Shropshire and Southwingfeild [South Wingfield] and Criche [Crich] in Derbyshire. The arbitrators decided to distribute the lands equitably by placing lots into a hat box. Four pendant seals (of Bedford, Petre, Noye and Selden) are attached, but Arundel, Pembroke and Shrewsbury did not sign or seal the document.

'Complete record of the restoration of the 17th. c. painted frieze in the Upper Reading Room of the Old Bodleian Library, Oxford, 1950-1955 [by] Helen Watson'

This illustrated report includes short biographical information on the people depicted in the frieze together with references and detailed descriptions of their portraits and other ornaments as they were before the restoration work began. It records the degree and methods of the restoration that followed the rediscovery of the frieze in 1949. These were carried out under the direction of E. Clive Rouse. Helen Watson was one of his assistants.

Note: Some pages were removed from the report by its author prior to its coming to the Library, as they were damaged by damp.

Acquisition: Given to the Library by Helen Watson in June 2007.
