CHURCH TERRIER 1634 (BODL: ARCH PAPERS BERKS C185)

A terrier of all ye Lands meadows, tythes & portions of portions
belonging to ye Vicar of Comner, taken by the inhabitants of
Comner together with ye Approbation of Thomas Drope vicar of
Comner & ye members belonging to ye same the 19th of Octob:1634.
 
In primus the vicar hath a mansion house with barne, stable,
hayhouse & orchard at ye entrance into ye town from Oxford.
 
It. the Vicaridge is indowed with one yard land disposed in the
fields of Comner viz in the Hurst Field eight ridges together
nigh Henwood, & eight more within the Hurst shooting up at ye
Warren Hill, & besides this an halfe acre more & tenne yards
small & great. In Rockley Field three acres and three yards. In
the Oseland three yards. In the Sandfield eight acres,& in the
Clay field three acres and one yard.
 
It. In Comner Meadow 3 acres and 3 yards,& each third year a
share of mon ham.
 
It. ye vicar half comons for eight beasts, 3 horses & threescore
sheepe.
 
It. one several close called the vicaridge, & ye Herbage & pfits
of ye churchyard.
 
It. the vicar hath the tith corn of all that land in the feilds
of Comner & knowne by the name of Acreman Land. One yardland
whereof is in the tenure of Thomas Werdham & Henry Hedges, one
yardland more in ye tenure of Tho.May, one halfe yardland in the
tenure of George Nichols, & one other halfe yard land late Toby
Pleadall, now in the tenure of Thomas Drope or his assigns, & a
piece of tenne acres in Rockly feild belonging to Mr Lane.
 
It. their belongs to the vicar the tyth of goodman Hedges close,
& a close thereto adjoining belonging to George Nichols, and a
close of Willm Bond called Heads adjoyning to ye West Feild, and
a little close there also belonging to John Higs.
 
It. the vicar is to have the tyth of a peice of ground in the
sandfeild called Picked mre belonging to Willm Bond, & certaine
ground at ye conduit belonging to Mr Lane & partly to John
Glover,& the lower part of Rockly close, which is moorish ground.
 
It. the vicar is to have the twentyith cocke of a parcell of
ground in the Clay feild belonging to Willm Perry & ioying to ye
clay land & the impropriator of the other half, & the tyth also
of certaine ground which is moorish and shoots over Woodend way &
belongs to Mr Lane, Richard Gasey & Thomas White, and another
parcel nigh the well belonging to ye freeholder.
 
It. the vicar is to have the tyth of all Orchards.
 
It. There are certaine meadows, y tyth whereof belongs to ye
vicar. As a close called Mead Close belonging to Richard Perry,
Oxlease adjoyning to ye great mead, Smith Dean belonging to Mr
Peacock his coppihold at Hillend, & a ground called Rochester in
the occupation of Henry Godfrey, a parcell of ground called
Morleys belonging to Jacob Stevens his coppihold, and another
called Thongs belonging to Deodatus Collis in ye tything of
Stroud, another parcel of ground called Welheys belonging to Hen:
Godfrey his coppihold, & another adjoyning belonging to John
Hopkins coppihold & lastly ye great mead grally except that only
which belongs to ye Rectory manner, & whereas ye Impropriator
receives noe tyth of Corne or Hey from the vicar, neither does ye
vicar from ye Impropriator, either for the orchard garden or
parke.
 
It. There are also certaine Rate tyths belonging to ye vicar. Mr
Philipson is to pay a rate tyth of thirteen shillings forre pence
ye yeare at two payments Michaelmas & Thannunciation of St Mary
the virgin for his grounds within the tything of Whitley. Mr
Dunch is to pay four nobles a yeare for ye tyth of his grounds in
Swinford by equall portions at ye 2 sayd feats, & a noble in ye
Rogation weeke at ye pambulation with a bason of water, & a
browne loaf, and four shillings at Michaelmas for ye liberty of
fishing.
 
It. the vicar is to have for ye ground called Long Dean the rate
of four shillings to be payd at ye feasts aforesaid by equal
portions.
 
It. the vicar ought to have out of Henwood & Bradley a rate of
seven shillings the yeare to be paid at ye feasts aforesaid by
even portions.
 
Customary tythes
The vicar is to have the tenth po()ond of wool at Shearing time
and wheen the sheep are fed & pastured in the parrish part of ye
yeere four pence the score for every month. It. ye parishioner is
to take up three lambs & ye vicar ye fourth at St Marks day, and
then ye parishioner nine & the vicar the tenth and so to the end.
 
It. the parishioner is to take up 2 pigs & the vicar the third &
fetch away the tith pigge at three weeks old, if under seven, an
halfe penny for every one, if seven he is to have one paying back
three halfe pence and so also for lambs and calves.
 
It. the vicar is to have the seventh calfe paying back three half
pence, if a calfe be killed the left shoulder, if sold the tenth
penny of the price, if weaned an halfe penny for evry one under a
tyth, & ye tyth calfe is to be kept by the owner sixe weeks.
 
It. the vicar is to have a penny for ye fall of a colt, a tyth of
geese at Lammas & the tenth of all fruits apples peares at ye
time of gathering.
 
It. the vicar is to have for a new milch cow two pence for a
farme milch cow. three halfe pence at Lammas 3 eggs for the
cocke, 2 for each hen, 3 for ye drake, 2 for each duck on good
lay day.
 
It. accustomd offerings are due at Easter two pence halfe penny
for a servant, three pence for a man and his wife, three pence
for a widdow or a widdower, an halfe penny for a child in a
fathers house or under his government, at ye churching of women
five pence in Lieu of Crisomes, for burials sixpence at ye church
stile, & one penny at Easter for a garden where flowers grow.
 
It. ye vicar is to have ye tyth of all Acreman land (erased)
 
It. ye vicar is to have tyth of hemp in Orchards or about
homestalls & uppon all ground that is not arable, & is commonly
reputed that as the vicar ought to have all the tyth of all
Acreman land, so also of all morrish ground & whatsoever is not
plowable ground and lies not in ridge and furrow.
 
It. ye vicar is to have mortuaries in ye whole parrish according
to ye maw.
 
It. ye vicar is to have a sty or hogges in Comner wood according
as hath binne formerly used.
 
Lastly the vicar is to provide a drinking on Christmas day after
Evening prayer according to ye ancient custome for the
inhabitants of Comner, & such of the parrish that resort to the
church on that day.
