Downloading Bartholomew digital map data for use with MapInfo

A range of World, US, European, GB and London digital map data can be downloaded by Oxford University users. The data is accessed via SOLO (http://solo.ouls.ox.ac.uk). OS Opendata datsets are available in MapInfo format (and some in ESRI Shapefile) on the MapInfo workstations temporarily relocated in Duke Humfrey's Library. Other data is available there but it is for use on these workstations ONLY. Please ask staff for advice.

Digital vector or raster data - which do I need?

All directories contain digital vector data and there is also European and GB raster data. The digital vector data is for use in a GIS (MapInfo) but can be used in other GIS applications which can import MapInfo format data. The raster files are images (georeferenced TIFF format) and they can be used in a GIS, or in image processing software such as Photoshop or PaintShop Pro.

MapInfo, Photoshop and PaintShop Pro can be purchased by Oxford University members from the OUCS shop.

Downloading the digital data

Step 1: In SOLO, search for bartholomew digital mapping data:

Step 2: Click Online Access (Get It) in the Bartholomew Digital Mapping Data link:

Step 3: You will now see the directory listing and you can select a dataset. As an example, to download the most detailed World dataset, click the World5million link:

Step 4: Click the zipped_download link to see the map data available for that dataset:

Step 5: Select a dataset, download and unzip the contents into a folder on your PC. The zipped file contents file lists the files contained in each zipped download: When you have downloaded the files, keep them together in the same directory - if you separate the individual files (.tab .dat. .id. .dat) into separate folders or locations you will not be able to open the files in MapInfo.

Downloading the raster data
To use the raster data in image processing software, such as photoshop you only need the approprate TIFF file. The data in split into a number of sections, either based on OS grid squares (GB data) or a number of sections (European and World data).

The raster data can also be used in a GIS. The TIFF files are geo-referenced, which means that other data such as points and line features can be overlaid and they will be correctly located on the raster image. If you are using the files in MapInfo, you also need to download either the accompanying .tfw file (European data) or the Colour or Grey tab file (GB data).
