Bodleian Library Map Room - MAPPING APPLICATIONS AND
DATA SOURCES ON CD-ROM

There are now several graphic mapping and reference applications available in the Map Room. For new users there are regular demonstrations most Tuesdays at 9.30, which last about one hour and provide an introduction to the packages. The facilities are available during opening hours (09.00 to 19.00 Monday to Friday in term, 09.00 to 17.00 in vacation and 09.00 to 13.00 Saturdays). Prior booking is recommended, as demand is heavy especially during term. To book a session, either call in or telephone the enquiry desk on (01865) - 277014. Remember, there is no charge for using the facilities, just for the prints you produce!

AutoRoute Plus

AutoRoute Plus is a comprehensive UK mapping and travel package which can be used to display maps in both customised vector format and bitmapped Ordnance Survey topographic mapping in full colour. Areas can be selected by panning and zooming, in addition to searching the gazetteer. Maps can be printed or exported to other applications via the clipboard. Databases can be created and overlaid on the maps. Detailed travel itineraries can also be displayed and printed.

C91 UK Census

C91 is the complete dataset for the 1991 Census of the UK. Display and print census tables, or export data for use in spreadsheets or other applications. Data for England and Wales can also be exported to SCAMP-2 and mapped in colour.

Digital Chart of the World

Digital Chart of the World is a comprehensive world mapping package on four CDs, produced by the Defense Mapping Agency from world air navigation charts. Features can be displayed on a choice of four projections at a range of scales. The maps are plotted in vector format which produces high quality hard copy. International and administrative boundaries, contours and colour layering, communications, water features and land use are among the choice of themes available. Maps can be printed in colour or saved to disk for use in other applications.

General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans

This is the first digitised version of GEBCO, displaying bathymetric contouring, undersea features, digitised world coastlines at scales from 1:43 000 000 to 1:250 000, tracklines and echo-sounding correction tables. Areas can be selected by chart number, latitude and longitude limits or zoom box. There are five projections available together with grid and distance measuring options. Data can be exported in ASCII or DXF format.

GEOname Digital Gazetteer

The GEOname Digital Gazetteer is a comprehensive World gazetteer (excluding the USA and Dependencies) containing place and feature names from the U.S. Defense Mapping Agency database. The database contains place and feature names which appear on the 1:250 000 scale Joint Operations Graphic map series. The database can be searched for a specific name, either exact spelling or using a wildcard character. You can also retrieve the names of over 500 features types, including spot; vegetation; communications; administrative area; hydrographic and topographic. Searches can be limted to one or more countries or a bounding box defined by latitude and longitude limits.

Global Explorer

This easy-to-use 'point and click' application can be used to display maps of any part of the world at various scales, depicting political boundaries, relief, drainage, urban areas, communications and tourist information. Country profiles are available and maps can be printed via Paintbrush in colour.

SCAMP-2

SCAMP-2 produces high-quality, colour displays in vector format for user-selected areas of England and Wales from the 1991 Census. An extensive selection of data from the Census has been arranged in tables, which can be displayed at national, county, district, ward and enumeration district level. Cartographic data can be displayed in addition to, or instead of the census data. Data can be analysed and exported for use in spreadsheets etc. Databases can be created and displayed and data can be imported from C91.

United Kingdom Digital Marine Atlas

This bathymetric mapping application is similar to the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans, but limited to the UK area. Produced by the British Oceanographic Data Centre and NERC, it contains small scale thematic charts including marine geomorphology, sea temperatures, fishing areas and other data.

World Guide

World Guide is a comprehensive database of facts and figures from 1980 onwards, covering 247 countries and regions of the world. Countries can be selected by clicking on a world map, from a list or by data values. Statistical data can be displayed cartographically, by line or bar graphs and as lists. Data can be exported in a variety of formats to suit most spreadsheet programs. Data lists and country reports can be printed or exported. Maps and graphs can be exported or printed in colour.
