Finding maps on OLIS

Searching for maps on GeoWeb in five easy steps

You may find it useful to print this guide to refer to when using OLIS

STEP ONE

The first step is to connect to OLIS via GeoWeb
When OLIS has connected, you will see this screen - select the Oxford OLIS Live database:

Select Oxford OLIS Live

STEP TWO

The second step is to Click Keyword searching, then click Limits:

Select Keyword Searching

STEP THREE

The third step is to set the limiting date(s) and material type to Maps, as shown here.

NOTE: If you do not limit by dates(s) you may find that several hundred records are retrieved!

Set limits
Click Set Limits to confirm.

STEP FOUR

Now you can enter your search term. In this example, a search is made for maps of Sudan:

Enter search term
Click Submit Search to find maps.

STEP FIVE

The results of your search will now be displayed like this:

Search results

To view the full record details, click Full Record. To save the search results, click Mark.

You can print the search results (if a printer is available) or if you are searching within Oxford University you can e-mail them to yourself.

And finally... a couple of points to bear in mind when searching for maps on OLIS:

1. You may not get exactly the same results if you search by title rather than subject.
2. If you do not limit type to maps you will retrieve atlases and books with maps, instead of maps themselves.
