Speed Oxford
Oxford by John Speed 1610

The Map Section is part of the Department of Special Collections and Western Manuscripts.

For geography at the University, see the School of Geography website.

The Map Section houses the world's seventh largest collection of maps. Well over one million sheet maps and 20,000 atlases are available to readers. The collections include early examples of cartography, such as the fourteenth century Gough Map, portolan charts, estate maps and many atlases. The Bodleian Library is entitled to claim a free copy of any map published in Britain within one year of publication, so the Map Section has one of the most comprehensive collections of Ordnance Survey maps in existence. We also offer GIS facilities (MapInfo workstations and a range of digital map data).

The Map Section is in the New Bodleian Reading Room which is located on the first floor of the New Bodleian Library

You will find links to all areas of the Map Section website (including how to find maps on the online catalogue OLIS) on the Reader Info pages

If you wish to connect your portable pc to the library network when you are working in the library, please have a look at the Mobile Computing web page

Ordnance Survey MasterMap™ digital map data

The Bodleian Library has recently acquired Ordnance Survey's new digital product, OS MasterMap, replacing Land-Line (the previous OS electronic mapping data), and continuing its archive of large-scale mapping of the nation.

The born-digital cartographic datasets embody the cutting edge of geographic technology and make OS a pioneer in national mapping. Ordnance Survey (OS) digital data covers Great Britain at scales of 1:1,250 for urban areas, 1:2,500 for rural areas and 1:10,000 for moorland. The Topography Layer of seamless, colour digital mapping identifies and datestamps each feature on the landscape uniquely, and includes land area classifications; buildings; roads, tracks and paths; rail; water; terrain and height; heritage and antiquities; structures; and administrative boundaries.

This mapping is voluntarily deposited by Ordnance Survey with all of the UK Legal Deposit Libraries, and may be accessed in reading rooms using a mapping application specifically designed for the libraries. Printed extracts of A4 size may be taken by readers within the constraints of fair dealing: for purposes of private study; non-commercial research, criticism, review and news reporting; or parliamentary/judicial procedings.

The Bodleian Library offers OS MasterMap on a public terminal in the Maps area of the New Bodleian Reading Room. Consult with staff at the Enquiry Desk for assistance.

The Bodleian Library has acquired at auction the missing part of a unique series of Tudor tapestry maps. Woven in wools and silks, the Sheldon Tapestry Map for Gloucestershire is a fine example of cartography and decorative art from the 16th century. More information...
