Manuscripts of Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875)

The arranging, listing and indexing of this collection of manuscripts of the pioneer Egyptologist and indefatigable traveller has been completed. A detailed catalogue and index has been prepared and is available in paper format and on-line. The collection is best known for Wilkinson's notes and drawings of archaeological sites in Egypt, where he lived from 1821 to 1833, but it also includes a wealth of material relating to his travels in the Balkans, Western Europe and the Middle East. Other papers reflect his researches in British archaeology, zoology, classical studies and international affairs. He corresponded not only with Egyptologists, but also with many other antiquarians and intellectuals.

Further details about the collection are available from the Department of Special Collections and Western Manuscripts at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, OX1 3BG (e-mail Enquiries.SC@bodleian.ox.ac.uk). A catalogue of The Wilkinson exhibition held in 1997 is available from the Library.
