Edward Jones. [Brushmaker]. At the Three Brushes (c. 1709)

The letterpress trade card of Edward Jones is an example of the simplest form of the genre, reminiscent of a newspaper advertisement but for its larger type face and unprinted verso. In this case the verso has been used as a manuscript bill, dating the card to 1709 (or before). The trade sign is not illustrated. Cards of tradesmen on London Bridge are of considerable interest. Heal’s article on the subject lists neither this nor the card of John Fairchild (no. 6).
