Math: Varenne’s. [Bookseller]. At the Senecas head (1711-12)

The use of heads, either of people associated with the trade or of monarchs or saints, was a common element of trade signs. Examples of the first two are shown in this section. Varenne or Varens was at the ‘Senecas Head’ in 1710, a sign also used in 1711 by J. Round in Exchange Alley. Varens also sold patent medicines, the ‘true cephalick and head snuff’ and purging sugar plums. The engraver, Hendrik Hulsbergh, a Dutchman who settled in England, died in 1729 in London.
